Hello, my mother was recently diagnosed with emphysema, I’m not sure on this, so i’m asking.. She has been smoking for years. Healthy but is now diagnosed with this disease, how long can she live smoking around 4-5 packs a week? I’m asking because if she passes, I’ll be a ward of the state, she was diagnosed with it around early December, late november. Please comment asap. Thanks ! (:

People can live a very, very long time with emphysema. It just makes living more difficult.
My uncle lived 20yrs. after he was diagnosed–than died of a heart attack.
But she would probably live longer if she quit smoking.
Take care
as others have already said you can live a fair deal with emphysema
I was diagnosed with emphysema 10 yrs ago. I didn’t stop smoking until 4 yrs ago. I’m doing pretty well. Both of my parents died of emphysema.. it totally depends on how you care for yourself and if you desire to live. My Dad was very depressed (long story) he died quickly.. but they didn’t have all the medications then that they do now. Mom lived 20 yrs after she was diagnosed. I’m pretty young.. and doing everything I can for my disease now… I could die tomorrow or in 20 yrs.
